Jenny Pinkett launches Tax Campaign

Posted on Friday 9th April 2010 00:00 by Keith

Tamworth Liberal Democrat Candidate Jenny Pinkett launched her campaign for Fair Taxes ahead of the General Election on May 6th.

“The gap between richest and poorest is wider now even than during the Thatcher years. Britain is one of the most unequal societies in terms of both income and wealth,” says Jenny. The gap between top earners and the lowest paid is greater than any time since the early 1960’s. The bottom 50% of the population own 9% of the wealth, while the richer half owns 91%. Rebalancing the tax system will help to reduce this inequality and create a fairer, and happier society, Jenny believes. Fair Tax does not mean More Tax - it means a redistribution of the burden in favour of those on lower and middle incomes. That will include closing tax loopholes exploited by the very rich and bringing taxes on unearned income into line with taxes on earnings. Jenny is also calling for taxes on those who pollute our environment.

“I was quite  surprised to discover quite how strong is the link between inequality in society and a range of social problems,” Jenny told us. “The countries with the widest gap between rich and poor, such as the USA, the UK and Portugal also have the most severe social problems such as crime and teenage pregnancies."

“My research also shows how this affects health  and welfare, particularly among the younger generation and life expectancy is shorter. Likewise,  countries which have a much more equal distribution of wealth and income, such as Japan and the Scandinavian countries come out near the top of the league.” she said. Jenny supports raising the tax threshold (the point where you start paying income tax) to be raised to £10 000. That means relief from all income tax for 3.5 million of the poorest, including many pensioners. Higher earners will also benefit on average by £700 a year. And Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, is backing Jenny’s campaign.
