Local Elections 2011 - What we are standing for
Prioritising Local Services Not a single Liberal Democrat-controlled council has closed a Sure Start Centre.
Lib Dem councils have kept job losses to a minimum, for example 278 in Sheffield as opposed to around 2000 in Labour-controlled Manchester.
Labour is playing political games, hoping to blame sackings on the coalition government.
Liberal Democrat Councils are prioritising services that matter to their residents - like local transport, libraries, youth centres and public toilets.
Liberal Democrats have cut spending from the back office and management and used reserves prudently to support essential services, rather than prestige projects.
LICHFIELD LIBERAL DEMOCRATS WILL
- Defend our Green Belt.
- Stronger action to bring empty properties back into use.
- Improve provision of affordable housing for sale or rent
- Encourage re-opening local rail links
- Alleviate street parking problems.
- Restore sanity to the Council?s finances.
Lib Dem Council Leader slams Conservative record on Lichfield budget
Councillor Ian Jackson criticised Lichfield District councils reckless, year after year, running down of reserves to subsidise prestige projects - long before we had the national financial crisis. "The Garrick theatre is a community asset - but needing an annual subsidy of £550,000 in the last year it is also a millstone round the neck of the local tax payer."
"The reserves, most of which came from selling off the housing stock many years ago, have nearly all gone leaving future spending exposed at the worst possible time".
