Local Elections May 2011

Posted on Thursday 19th May 2011 08:00 by Keith

Reducing from 4 councillors on each of Lichfield District Council and Lichfield City Council to just one on Lichfield City council in the elections on May 5th has to be a disappointment.

The actual reduction in votes cast in our previously held Leomansley and Chadsmead wards compared with four years ago was quite small with narrow majorities in our favour in 2007 turned into narrow losses.  Just an extra 50 votes in Leomansley ward or 60 votes in Chadsmead would have given us a councillor in each ward.  Every indication throughout the campaign was that the excellent record of our defending councillors was appreciated but for just a few too many people national issues carried greater weight.

Elsewhere in the country there were bright spots where local Lib Dems had been more successful in spite of the national trend and we will be looking to learn from then.  An example nearby was in Burton town ward where Michael Rodgers actually increased his majority from four years ago.

Congratulations to Ian Jackson for retaining his Lichfield City Council seat and thanks to Marion Bland, Derek Love, John Smith, Christel Roe and Phil Bennion for their past excellent work as local councillors.

Thanks also to all of our candidates and volunteer helpers for all their hard work in a hard and well fought election campaign.
